WHALE WATCHING GAZEBO
|
The mighty California Gray whales pass Little Whale Cove while traveling to the warm birthing waters off Baja California. You may be lucky enough to see one of them lolling in the water off Cove Point. Look for a massive dark shape ranging from 23 to 60 feet, streaked with thousands of scars. From April or early May throughout the summer, watch for the calves, too.
The gray whales often feed off the ocean bottom in this area, coming close enough to the rocky headland to scrape off the barnacles and whale lice clinging to their skins, and blowing a vaporous plume of water and oil from the two blowholes atop their heads.
